Polytechnic of Milan

Politecnivo di Milano

Politecnico di Milano is a scientific-technological university which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers. The University has always focused on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research developing a fruitful relationship with business and productive world by means of experimental research and technological transfer.

Research has always been linked to didactics and is a priority commitment which has allowed Politecnico di Milano to achieve high quality results at an international level as to join the university to the business world.
Research activity moreover constitutes a parallel path to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system. Knowing the world in which you are going to work is a vital requirement for training students. By referring back to the needs of the productive, industrial world and public administration, research is facilitated in following new paths and dealing with the need for constant and rapid innovation. The alliance with the industrial world, in many cases also favored by the Fondazione Politecnico and by Consortiums to which Politecnico belongs, allows the university to follow the vocation of the territories in which it operates and to be a stimulus for their development. The challenge which is being met today projects this tradition which is strongly rooted in the territory beyond the borders of the country, in a relationship which is developing first of all at the European level with the objective of contributing to the creation of a "single professional training market".

Politecnico takes part in several research and training projects collaborating with the most qualified European universities. Politecnico's contribution is increasingly being extended to other countries: from North America to Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe. Today the drive to internationalization sees Politecnico di Milano take part in the European and world network of leading technical universities and offers several exchange and double-degree programmes beside 3 three-year Bachelor of Science degree programmes, 19 Master of Science degree programmes, 12 Specialization Master's programmes and 24 Doctoral programmes which are entirely taught in English.

Founded by the Politecnico in partnership with the local organizations and companies. It promotes applied research, technological transfer to businesses and the public administration, as well as permanent professional training, and internationalization.

Description of the institution-department:

The Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering has just been founded merging researchers from different sectors to work together in an interdisciplinary environment
The strategic programme of the team contributing to the Proposal focuses on preventive and planned conservation of the historical-architectural heritage. In the past few years this issue has become a priority for regulatory efforts, and with its research work this RU has given a material contribution to both national and international actions. In Italy the Code on the Cultural Heritage and Landscape dated 2004 replaced the definition of "restoration work" with a process definition (consistent, coordinated and planned) of conservative activities (analysis, prevention, maintenance, and restoration).
The starting point is the shift from restoration as an event, to conservation as continuous care. This triggers research into the innovation of the whole process, by interweaving technological research with a thorough review of restoration procedures (monitoring and diagnostic methods, qualification of operators, project content, data-collection and IT systems, etc.).
As this proposal was welcomed in Italy and in Europe new challenges arose, i.e. to analyse process innovation and the planning conditions that are peculiar of a proactive vision that places the issue of protection and development of the cultural heritage inside the network of territorial relations that are implied in the concept of “cultural asset” itself.
In the past few years the RU, with the significant support of the Lombardy Regional Government, has created a network of (institutional and scientific) relations in Italy and internationally, which are the prerequisite for its implementation strategy of research on the topic.
Research activities have been further expanded with scientific partnership, both nationally and internationally, in the domains of strategic planning and economy of culture. Participants have been for several years consultants of Fondazione Cariplo on the “cultural districts” project, which contains many innovative aspects on the relationships between cultural heritage management and sustainable development.
Participants got successful experience in EU projects on Cultural Heritage, from MEDICI network to EU CHIC Project.
